The difference between WU Fit and traditional Wushu? Learn which approach may suit adults over 35 who want to improve their fitness and flexibility
One question I expect to hear more often as WU Fit grows is:
"So... is this actually Wushu?"
The answer is:
Yes — but it's not a traditional Wushu programme.
And that's intentional.
WU Fit uses movements, ideas and physical qualities drawn from Wushu, but the goal is different.
Traditional Wushu teaches martial arts.
WU Fit uses Wushu-based training to help adults build better fitness and movement.
Those two things overlap.
But they aren't identical.
Traditional Chinese martial arts can contain an enormous amount of material.
Depending on the system, training may include:
🥋 stances
👊 strikes
🦵 kicks
🤼 partner work
⚔️ weapons
📚 forms
🥊 sparring
🧠 philosophy and discipline
If you want to become a martial artist, that's part of the journey.
You aren't just doing exercises.
You're learning a system.
That takes time.

WU Fit changes the objective.
Instead of asking:
"How do I teach somebody a complete martial art?"
I asked:
"Which parts of Wushu can help an everyday adult become stronger, more mobile, more flexible and more confident?"
That leads to a very different programme.
We're not removing the Wushu influence.
We're changing what we're using it for.
In traditional martial arts, learning the art itself matters.
You may spend a long time perfecting one form.
You may need to learn applications.
You may practise with partners.
You may progress through a technical curriculum.
WU Fit has a more direct physical goal.
We want to improve:
strength
flexibility
mobility
balance
coordination
endurance
body control
You don't need to master a traditional system to achieve those things.
Forms can be valuable.
I've trained them for years.
But they can also be frustrating for a busy beginner.
You may spend weeks or months simply remembering what comes next.
Turn left.
Punch.
Step.
Kick.
Wait... was that the other direction?
😄
Traditional martial artists accept that because learning the form is part of the art.
WU Fit doesn't need the same requirement.
We can use shorter movement combinations and individual skills to work on the physical quality directly.
If you're learning a fighting art, eventually training with another person makes sense.
You can't properly learn to deal with an opponent without another person.
But WU Fit isn't trying to teach you how to fight.
So there is no reason to make sparring compulsory.
That immediately makes the programme more approachable for people who like martial arts movement but have zero desire to be punched.
A fairly reasonable preference, if you ask me. 😄
Traditional martial arts include many partner drills.
That creates a problem for home training.
If the exercise requires another person, you can't simply practise it whenever you want.
WU Fit is designed around solo training.
That means you can train:
🏠 at home
⏰ on your schedule
👤 without a partner
📱 using guided online sessions
For adults with limited time, that's a big advantage.
Modern competitive Wushu has impressive athletes.
Their goal may be to perform a routine at the highest level possible.
That changes how they train.
The same is true for competition fighters.
They need training appropriate to competition.
WU Fit members don't.
You don't get extra health points because somebody gave you a medal.
Our priority is what the training does for your body and your life.

Traditional systems often contain specific techniques you eventually need to perform.
WU Fit has more freedom.
If a jump doesn't make sense for a particular person, we don't need the jump.
If a stance is too deep today, we can make it higher.
If your kick only reaches knee height, that's where we begin.
The movement should progress with you.
That's particularly important for adults starting later in life.
Sometimes.
But "easier" isn't really the right word.
I'd say more appropriate to the goal.
Doing a backflip is difficult.
That doesn't mean it's the best exercise for a 50-year-old who wants healthier hips.
Difficulty isn't automatically value.
A good programme asks:
What result are we trying to achieve?
Then it uses the appropriate challenge.
Traditional Wushu may be a better fit if your goal is:
becoming a martial artist
learning a complete traditional system
studying forms in depth
training weapons
learning fighting applications
competing
performing
investing significant time in technical mastery
If that excites you, fantastic.
Traditional martial arts can be incredibly rewarding.
WU Fit may be a better fit if you're saying:
"I love martial arts movement, but I mainly want to get fit."
"I want to feel less stiff."
"I'd like better balance."
"I don't want to fight anyone."
"I only have 15 or 20 minutes."
"I want something more interesting than the gym."
"I'm over 40 and don't fancy discovering whether I can still do a cartwheel."
That's the person I created WU Fit for.
Yes.
And I actually like that possibility.
Imagine you start WU Fit at 45.
You're stiff.
Your balance isn't great.
Your legs aren't as strong as they used to be.
Six months later, you've built a better foundation.
Now traditional martial arts look less intimidating.
Fantastic.
If WU Fit eventually gives somebody the confidence and physical ability to step into a traditional Wushu school, I'd consider that a success too.
I don't see this as:
traditional Wushu bad — WU Fit good.
That's not the point.
They serve different goals.
I respect traditional training.
WU Fit exists because I wanted a way for more adults to access some of the benefits without needing to take on everything that comes with becoming a traditional martial artist.
That's the difference.
