Mobility and Flexibility After 40: Why Strength Alone Isn't Enough

Mobility and Flexibility After 40: Why Strength Alone Isn't Enough

Feeling stiffer after 40? Learn why mobility, flexibility and strength work better together — and how martial-arts-inspired training can help you keep moving well.

Mobility and Flexibility After 40: Why Strength Alone Isn't Enough

One of the strange things about getting older is that you don't usually wake up one morning and suddenly think:

"Well, that's it. I'm stiff now."

It happens gradually.

You notice you don't turn quite as easily.

Getting down to the floor feels different.

You reach for something and your body doesn't go where you expected.

Maybe your legs are strong — but certain positions feel tighter than they used to.

This is why I think mobility and flexibility after 40 deserve far more attention.

Strength matters.

But strength on its own isn't the whole picture.

Strength Is Important — I'm Not Arguing Against It

Whenever I talk about mobility, I want to make one thing clear.

I'm not against weight training.

Not even slightly.

Strength training can be extremely useful.

I used it during competitive Wushu training.

My concern is with only training strength while ignoring everything else.

A body can be strong and still move poorly.

That's why I prefer to think about fitness as a combination of qualities.

You want strength.

But you also want usable movement.

Flexibility and Mobility Aren't the Same Thing

These terms get mixed together all the time.

A simple way to think about it is:

Flexibility is the range available to you.

Mobility is your ability to move through that range with control.

Imagine lifting your leg.

Someone else may be able to push your leg higher than you can raise it yourself.

That tells us you may have passive flexibility available.

But being able to lift and control the leg yourself requires more.

That is where strength, balance and mobility come in.

Why Does This Matter More as We Get Older?

A lot of adults become less physically varied as life gets busier.

We sit.

We drive.

We work at desks.

We repeat similar movements.

Then when we exercise, we may choose another activity built around repetitive patterns.

None of this means you're doomed to become stiff.

It does mean that if you want to keep certain abilities, it makes sense to keep using them.

If you want good balance, practise balance.

If you want useful range of motion, move through useful ranges.

If you want stronger legs, train them.

The body adapts to what you repeatedly ask it to do.

Why Wushu Got Me Thinking About This

Traditional Wushu contains a wide range of movements.

Stances.

Kicks.

Direction changes.

Weight shifts.

Rotations.

Balances.

You don't spend the entire session performing one motion in one plane.

That variety made me realise how many useful physical qualities martial arts training touches naturally.

WU Fit takes that idea but removes the expectation that an adult beginner should immediately perform difficult Wushu skills.

The goal isn't:

"How low can I force you into a stance?"

The goal is:

"Can we gradually improve what your body can comfortably control?"

That's a very different approach.

Strength Without Range Can Still Feel Limiting

Imagine you have strong legs.

That's great.

But if your ankles, hips or upper body feel restricted, everyday movement may still feel awkward.

Likewise, being extremely flexible without strength and control isn't necessarily what we want either.

That's why I prefer the combination:

strength + mobility + flexibility + control

These qualities support one another.

You Don't Need Extreme Stretching

This matters especially for people who already feel stiff.

Trying to force your body immediately into extreme positions is rarely a good way to make training feel sustainable.

The approach I prefer is gradual.

You work inside the range you currently have.

You repeat.

You let your body become comfortable there.

Then you gradually explore a little more.

No battle with your hamstrings required.

Mobility Training Doesn't Need to Take an Hour

This is another misconception.

You don't necessarily need a separate 60-minute mobility routine every day.

You can build mobility work into training.

A controlled stance works the legs while asking the hips and ankles to move.

A slow kick can challenge mobility, balance and strength simultaneously.

A movement sequence can work coordination while taking several joints through different positions.

This is one reason martial-arts-inspired training can be efficient.

One movement can train several qualities.

What Areas Should Adults Over 40 Pay Attention To?

Rather than chasing extreme flexibility everywhere, I'd focus on the areas that affect how you move.

For many people that includes:

    hips

      ankles

        hamstrings

          shoulders

            upper back

              balance and single-leg control

But the goal isn't to collect impressive stretching positions.

It's to make ordinary movement feel easier and more controlled.

                Flexibility Should Have a Purpose

I don't care whether you can do the splits simply for the sake of ticking "splits" off a list.

If that is your personal goal, great.

But for WU Fit, flexibility has a broader job.

                It should help you move.

                Reach.

                Turn.

                Step.

                Kick.

                Squat.

                Balance.

                And generally feel less restricted.

That is far more useful than chasing flexibility purely because somebody online told you a particular angle was impressive.

What About Adults Who Already Lift Weights?

Keep lifting if you enjoy it.

Then consider adding the things your lifting programme doesn't cover well.

                Perhaps that's mobility.

                Perhaps it's balance.

                Perhaps it's coordination.

WU Fit doesn't need to replace everything you're doing.

                It can complement it.

You might lift weights once or twice per week and use WU Fit training on other days.

                That's a perfectly sensible combination.

Consistency Beats One Giant Stretching Session

Another thing martial arts taught me is the value of repetition.

You don't become good at a kick by doing it once every three months for two hours.

                You practise regularly.

                Mobility is similar.

Ten or fifteen minutes repeated consistently can be far easier to sustain than waiting for the magical day when you suddenly have 90 minutes available.

                You don't need perfect conditions.

You need enough consistency for the body to get the message:

                We still use this movement.

How WU Fit Approaches Mobility and Flexibility

WU Fit combines flexibility and mobility with strength and control.

We're not treating your body like a piece of rubber we're trying to pull longer.

                We're teaching movement.

                That means gradually:

                🤸 improving range
💪 developing strength inside that range
                ⚖️ adding balance
                🎯 improving control
🥋 eventually using that range in more interesting movements

For me, that is a more complete way to train.
